The church of Christ is the church that Christ said he would build in Matthew 16. The church was to be built on the confession that Jesus is the Son of God, the confession Peter made. This church - the body of called out Christians - began on the first Pentecost after the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Jesus told the twelve disciples, in Luke 24, to wait in Jerusalem after he was ascended to the right hand of the Father in order to receive the power that is from on high. In Acts chapter two we have the fullfillment of that command on the day of Pentecost. Acts chapter one begins with the same promise that Luke records Jesus giving the desciples at the end of the Luke account of Jesus' life here on earth.
In Acts chapter two Luke records the actual account of the promise being fulfilled when the disciples are filled with the Holy Spirit, giving them the ability to preach the Gospel to all who were there. In this account we see that men from all over the region were in Jerusalem for the passover and could hear the message the Apostles spoke in thier own tongue - the Spirit gave them the ability to speak in the tongues of the men from all the surrounding areas so they could hear the Gospel being spoken.
Peter and the other Apostles spoke to the people the message of the cross, expounding on who the Christ was and that they being the responsible party for his crucifixion. In response to this the people asked what it was they needed to do to escape this guilt - to be saved from this great sin. Peter answered that they were to repent and be baptized for the remission of thier sins.
Those who gladly received the word spoken were baptized - about 3000 souls - and they were added to the Apostles number - those who were members of the church Christ purchased with His blood. Acts 2:47 tells us at the end of the account that "the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved."
